HeadSmart is a universal depression education program, specifically designed for young people.

HeadSmart is designed to increase young people's knowledge of depression and assist with building the necessary skills to enable individuals to:

  • Recognise depression
  • Support others living with depression
  • Seek help
  • Help improve negative attitudes and perceptions towards depression

HeadSmart is headed by Professor Patrick McGorry AO, 2010 Australian of The Year. Professor McGorry is a leading international researcher, clinician and advocate for the youth mental health reform agenda. He is Executive Director of Orygen Youth Health (OYH), a world-renowned mental health organisation for young people that has put Australia at the forefront of innovation in the prevention and treatment of mental illness.

Professor McGorry believes that early intervention offers the greatest hope for recovery and therefore takes every opportunity to educate the community to recognise the early signs of mental illness, without stigmatising or discriminating.
